How many years back can the IRS collect? I was told a maximum of 10 years. I am paying for a debt from 1992.

yes they have a 10 year SOL, but if you communicate with them in any form ( phone or letter ) then you have extended the 10 year SOL from the new date of communication. They will generally do a hard press to collect when they get close to the 10 year mark and will not let it go by that easily. So it is legally possible to be paying a 1992 taxes owed in 2007. BTW ther other person was wrong the IRS does go after back taxes owed up to 10 years , and have now turned some collections agencies in a pilot program to 3rd party who may or may not play by the IRS / Taxpayer rights rules. you can also try a OIC ( offer in compromise ) download the forms fill them out ( it's not that hard ) and mail them off at that point any wage garnishment or tax lien or assest seizure is temporarly suspended for 30 days until the response back from the OIC unit ( a yes or no ), once the response ( assuming yes ) you better have the check or form of payment ready to pay and then keep you taxes filed and current for the next 5 years or they can recind the offer and then go back to collection mode

1. I assume you have been paying for years on this debt. If you negotiated with the IRS to make payments, guess what? You'll never get off the hook. Sorry. :( Even if you didn't, the minute you made a payment you were acknowledging the debt. I know this from working in a law office. This goes for other debts, also, i.e. credit cards, hospital bills, etc. This is a fact. 2. I don't know if this would be risky or not, but you might look into re-negotiating a lower payment. I imagine you would have to show a hardship for them to accept a lower payment. This is just my opinion about re-negotiating so don't let it hold too much weight. I have nothing to base this opinion on but I guess I hope it could work for you.

If the IRS does not pick up on a past due tax that is owed, the statute of limitations for starting a new collection action is 10 years. Once they have you in installment agreements, you can pay and pay forever.
