A period of time when the economy starts to fail or stops growing. This could lead to a depression.

Can someone explain what a recession is?

A recession is an economic downturn. A time when the country is in debt, inflation is on the rise, unemployment is up, and people are not spending money. The key is that this economic downturn must be a pattern, not just a one time occurrence.

Terence L
Its when the economy has gone down for 2 or more straight quarters in a row. This leads to the simple definition of a depression as a recession that lasts for usually longer than a year and has a larger decline in business activity.

deeppost
Stinkbug gave you the textbook answer and is right on the money, no pun intended, basically it means people are not spending their cash.

2 consecutive quarters of non growth in the economy

The Shadow
You're in good company. Most of the people who answered your question don't know the definition of a recession either.

The first answer is basically correct. A recession is generally defined as two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth.
