Candypants | How does your current home insurance work when you move to a new house? |
We would like to make a claim on our home insurance for some water damage. We've made several claims in the last 2-3 years. I haven't really noticed an increase in our rates, but maybe it only takes effect once a year? Anyway, we're planning on moving this year, and my husband said we should make this next insurance claim shortly before we sell our house (so the ceiling is properly repaired when we sell), and the rates won't have a chance to go up because we're moving. Is this true? If we move and keep the same insurance company, surely our rates will follow us? Would they follow us if we switched to a different company? |

Rates are based on the number of claims in the area, not just your own. You can be dropped by your insurance company for too many claims if they suspect something.
Regardless, price shop when you move to see if you can get a better rate with an equally reputable company. |

You are losing sight of what your home insurance is really intended for. It is not for the small claims that most people make...it is not a maintenance contract for upkeep within the home. Your home policy should be used for catastrophic events such as fire. In making several claims you are unable to take advantage of loss free credits and when you move, more than likely the carrier you have now WILL NOT insure you. Some states have "pools" where you would have to submit your coverage to and pay a much higher premium than being with a "regular" company. Your claims history follows you as much as your credit report follows you! |

Most companies will drop you after the 3rd claim You will have to find a new insurance company for the new home. |

Rate increases are only seen on renewal. So while you might not see a rate increase for reporting a new claim right away you may see one on renewal. However if you've been making claims lately then you probably do not have a claims free discount, so you don't have a claims free discount to lose (and will never accumulate one at this rate).
Your biggest problem is if you've been making too many claims, then this one may be the straw that breaks the camel's back (assuming your insurer isn't already gearing up to not renew the policy). Your claim history will follow you from dwelling to dwelling. If you decide to switch insurers your claims history will be noted by other insurers, who will more than likely decline to insure you. This means you'll only be eligible for the non-standard market who will offer you: high rates; high deductibles; limited coverage. |
