a bank is your only hope but I don't think they are legal tender any more, to be honest.
Your best bet would be to try to "pass them off" in supermarkets etc. One at a time. |

The bank wont exchange them as they are no longer proper currency. The only way I think you could exchange them is by selling them maybe on ebay or somewhere like that. |

You'd first need to get some coin bags from the bank and sort them into the requisite amount for each bag. Alternatively you could take them to a supermarket that has a coin counter/changer. I'd advise you get a trolley to convey them from the car if you choose the latter option. :0) |

Asda... have change counting machines in their bigger stores....it`s just a question of emptying the change into the machine...letting the machine do it`s work...then taking the printed voucher to the till to change it into notes...it costs about 70p per £10...try it with a couple of the 50p`s first to see if it`ll accept them... |

The Bank of England continues to honour old notes indefinitely, and will always replace obsolete notes at face value. Some banks will accept old notes, but they are under no obligation to do so.
You are stuck with old coins, unless they have a collectible value, but I doubt that is the case with 50p coins unless in absolute mint condition. |

If you have an account with the HSBC we will change them all for you in one single session. However we only ask that you put them into little money bags of £10. So you have 20 50p coins in a single bag, and no other coin. So if you go to a bank and ask the cashier for 8 bags of money bags they should give you them. Then just return them once you've put them in the bags.
If you don't have an account with the HSBC then they might take it, but then again they might not. But banks defiantly will change them. |

You mean the old large-size 50p coins? They were withdrawn from circulation around 1997 but I think banks still accept them. |

The bank legally HAS to take them and exhange them for legal tender. They are not allowed to charge a fee for this but they may only take 10 coins at a time. Its worth calling your local branch in advance and find out what their policy is.
